It explores traditional beliefs about God, the Bible, Jesus, the nature of humanity, morality and the claim that Christianity is the sole true religion and way of life. Each of these beliefs is rejected as being no longer fit for purpose. A radical vision of Christianity is then offered which takes account of our current understanding of ourselves and our world.

In the process, traditional assumptions are challenged, old truths shattered and new insights taken on board. The book is structured around a series of statements about Christian beliefs based on the views expressed by Britains best known atheist, Richard Dawkins, Professor for the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University.

This approach is based on the belief that reflecting on the images, particularly the negative ones, which others have of us can be instructive in terms of our self-understanding.There are two key premises at the centre of Bringing God Down to Earth. The first is that the traditional concept of God as the creator of the universe and controller of natural events and human affairs is no longer tenable in the 21st century.

The second is that though Bible stories appear to be about the ancient past, their primary concern is about the present. Like all good stories they encourage us to engage with them so that we deepen our understanding of ourselves and others.Until his retirement in 2008, Iain Gray was senior lecturer in Religious Education at the University of Strathclyde. As an elder and former Education Convener at New Kilpatrick Church of Scotland, Bearsden, he adopts a critical and questioning approach to traditional beliefs and values. He is comfortable with the role of devils advocate in relation to Christianity and is even happy to adopt the mantle of heretic when necessary to provoke people to reflect on their beliefs.
