Having grown up in a rural community, spending time hanging out at a local diner called Cheryls, listening to the regulars yammer on about recent events, reading this collection of short stories was like stepping into the past for me. The regulars at Matties Place fill the pages of this book with wonderful yarns that are a hoot to read.

I read about 2/3 of the book in one sitting, and realized I wanted to savor the rest, so slowed down from there. Unfortunately, the book was done much too soon for me. Im looking forward to reading the sequel soon!My favorite tales were BOOMSPLAT! (did something similar myself once...), Lonnie and For Our Country, but the absolute best was Treehouse. Its a must-read for anyone who knows the power of a good story to transport us from the here-and-now to the what-could-be.This book will be a great read for anyone who yearns for a quieter time, when entertainment meant sharing a tall yarn, chasing fireflies on a summer night, and recognizing the power of love, and when faith, patriotism and hometown values werent a thing of debate.
